This 30-minute experience is a collaboration between Demian Albers, Matunda Groenendijk (Studio Apvis) historian Saskia Bultman (Utrecht University) and me.
Content: Throughout the twentieth century, underprivileged girls who “failed in society” were put in reeducation institutions, where they were subjected to scientific and medical examinations. The treatments basically meant that each girl had to conform to an ideal type: modest, accomodating and chaste, which is a highly biased and gendered approach; an issue we seek to address and critize in this immersive VR-experience.
Based on academically researched and unique source material, our evocative documentary elaborates on important issues such as patriarchy, feminism and intersectionality, clearly resonating with today’s world, aiming to encourage reflection and empowerment. In all, this is an art/science collaboration that seeks authentic and reliable knowledge dissemination, as well as artistic expression and impact.
