Micha Hamel is a composer, poet and researcher. His concert music has been performed by all of the major Dutch orchestras and ensembles. He has also composed two operas, created music theater with theatre company Orkater, and is a regular guest at the Holland Festival. His most recent music theater production is the large-scale Earth Workers Requiem/Jubilate, a collaboration with artist Jonas Staal.

He published five collections of poetry with publisher AtlasContact that stood out for their imaginative use of language and typographic experimentation. He received the Jan Campert Prize for his collection Bewegend Doel (2015). Since 2022 he has been publishing with Pluim publishers, where in 2023 the collection is daar iemand came out, and in 2025 his first novel Het zwarte raam.

In collaboration with animation artist Demian Albers, Hamel creates poetic experiences for Virtual Reality. These installations have appeared at many festivals for technology, contemporary art and literature, attracting diverse audiences. Their most recent work, Apart Together, was selected by the Dutch Film Festival and won awards in Austria, Berlin and Tokyo.

Since 2015, he has been a member of the Society of Arts of the KNAW, where he chairs the Arts and Science track. As a lecturer at Codarts University of Applied Sciences, he researched future scenarios for the classical music sector, and at Utrecht University he worked on a project on creative writing. Finally, Hamel is well known as conductor-coach on the AVROTROS television program Maestro, which cheerfully introduces Dutch celebrities to classical music.
